"Twin Up!" is a charming and challenging puzzle game where players guide adorable character pairs to unite on a grid-based watery map. The core objective is to bring matching characters together using the fewest possible moves, navigating through various environmental elements that either aid or obstruct their path. This project focuses on intuitive mechanics, strategic thinking, and delightful visual design.

Design Brief

The primary goal for "Twin Up!" was to create an engaging puzzle experience that combines simple drag-and-drop mechanics with increasing strategic depth. The design brief emphasized:
  • Core Mechanic: Players move characters across a grid, with the goal of bringing two identical characters adjacent to each other. Characters slide until they hit an obstacle or the edge of the map.
  • Environmental Features: Introduce elements like portals (teleportation), rocks (obstacles), and other unique tiles to add complexity and require players to think several steps ahead.
  • Progressive Difficulty: Levels should gradually introduce new mechanics and more intricate layouts, ensuring a smooth learning curve while maintaining challenge.
  • Visual Appeal: A cute, inviting art style with fluid animations to enhance player engagement and create a pleasant user experience.

Result

"Twin Up!" successfully delivers a captivating puzzle experience. Players are immediately drawn to the endearing characters and the clear, intuitive gameplay. The implementation of environmental features like portals and rocks significantly elevates the strategic element, transforming simple pairing into a brain-teasing challenge. The game features a progression system that introduces new mechanics at an appropriate pace, keeping players engaged through dozens of levels.

Game Designer (Your Role):
  • Core Gameplay Loop Design: Conceptualized and refined the "slide-to-match" mechanic, ensuring it was intuitive yet offered depth.
  • Level Design & Progression: Designed numerous levels, carefully balancing difficulty and introducing new environmental elements systematically. Developed the level progression curve.
  • Mechanics Implementation: Defined the rules and interactions for environmental features such as portals (teleportation logic, entry/exit points), rocks (immovable obstacles), and other potential elements (e.g., breakable ice, one-way paths).
  • UI/UX Flow: Contributed to the user interface and user experience design, focusing on clear visual feedback for moves, character states, and level objectives.
  • Playtesting & Iteration: Conducted extensive playtesting, gathered feedback, and iterated on level designs and mechanics to optimize player enjoyment and challenge.
